World Nines

The inaugural Aussie Rules World Nines will be held in London in 2010. London has been chosen as it is the city most likely to attract the maximum number of teams.

Rugby Union has the Hong Kong Sevens and Rugby League has the World Sevens. Both events have been a great success in promoting and developing both sports internationally, and ARI will seek to do the same with the World Nines.

As such ARI invites the AFL to support the event.

Competition Format

  • The tournament will be played over two consecutive days.
  • Teams play the other teams in their pool.
  • Matches will commence every 45 minutes to facilitate a carnival type atmosphere.
  • Each match will consist of 2 x 15 minute halves.
  • Each team will play a minimum of 4 matches during the event.
  • Each team will play in their national colours.
  • National anthems of the competing teams will be played prior to the start of each match.
  • The winners of both semi-finals shall play in the World Nines Final.
  • The winner shall be awarded the World Nines Cup.
