Branding
There has been much debate over many years as to what to call the game internationally. The official name of the sport is Australian Rules Football, also known informally as Australian Football, Aussie Rules or footy.
Other variants that have been proposed include Ozball, Ozrules, Aussie Ball, Ozfooty, Kangaroo Ball and many others.
In recent times, however, the Australian Football League has made a concerted push to re-brand the sport as 'AFL'. This has led to many people in Australia, particularly those in NSW and Queensland, referring to the sport as 'AFL' e.g. 'Do you play AFL, soccer or rugby?'
Although first promoted in developing markets, the term 'AFL' as a substitute for 'Australian Rules Football' has been increasingly adopted by the media and at grassroots level all over Australia.
As a result, ARI has adopted the term 'AFL 9s' for the 9-a-side version of the game.
