CAFL
Since its inception in 2005, CAFL has aimed to encourage participation and promotion of Australian Rules Football in the Czech Republic. Starting out with just a few guys kicking a footy in August of 2005 in Letna Park in Prague, CAFL went on to proudly host the first international matches in the Czech Republic in November. The Prague Cup was a success and the Czech Lions were born.
In 2006 and 2007, CAFL focussed on building a national team to compete in the Tri-Nations competition with Austria and Croatia. Joining this competition has been great for CAFL footy and built a real team spirit, both for the road trips to Vienna and Zagreb, and the home leg. CAFL hosted the CEAFL Championships in 2006, featuring 5 National Teams. 2007 saw continued improvement, both on the field and off. The Czech Lions went on to finish a creditable 5th place in the 2007 EU Cup in Hamburg. Showing marked improvement and building on the abilities of the local players were key factors in this successful EU Cup outing.
In 2008, CAFL has gone a step further, providing better training facilities and has also hosted the first local CAFL League matches. Numbers have increased, particularly local and non-Australian players, while the steady influence of resident and travelling Aussies has sparked further interest and commitment from all involved. The first CAFL League matches were played in September this year, buoying enthusiasm for a strong 2008 EU Cup challenge and a bright 2009 season.
