The inaugural Australian Football Cup was held in Melbourne, Australia in 2002.
11 teams participated - Canada, Ireland, USA, Denmark, Great Britain, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, South Africa, Japan and Nauru.
Ireland defeated Papua New Guinea in the final to be crowned the inaugural World Champions.
Wales, a strong rugby football nation is a very new country to Aussie Rules. Aussie Rules Wales formed in September 2005 and has expanded to several senior teams. The national team, Red Dragons, debuted in November 2007 to play against England.
Young Englishman Will Thursfield entered the AFL as a rookie following an outstanding junior career since arriving in Australia and is now held by many to be one of the best young defenders in Aussie Rules.
