History
The inaugural Australian Football Multicultural Cup was held in Melbourne in March 2004.
The aim of the event was twofold:
1. to celebrate Melbourne's ethnic diversity and harmony, and
2. use the sport of Australian football, as Australia's only indigenous sport, to break down cultural and ethnic barriers. We may come from many different backgrounds but we are all Australians.
The Multicultural Cup took place on Harmony Day on Sunday, 21 March 2004 and was an official Harmony Day event. Eight teams from Melbourne's multicultural communities competed and emphasis was on participation and fun.
Each team played a minimum of two and maximum of three matches (2 x 20 minute halves) under the banner of their country of origin and in their national colours. Further, the national anthems of the competing teams was played prior to the start of each match.
The two teams that were ranked first and second at the conclusion of the preliminary round of matches played each other in the Grand Final. Congratulations to Israel, who were presented with the Multicultural Cup by AFL legend Ron Barassi.
Each team and/or the community they represented also provided a cultural performance before each match. The quality of these performances was exceptional.
