Introduction
The Australian Football Harmony Cup (previously known as the Multicultural Cup) features teams drawn from Melbourne's migrant communities. It took place in Melbourne on March 21, 2010. The aim of the event was twofold:
1. to celebrate Melbourne's ethnic diversity and harmony, and
2. use the sport of Australian football, as Australia's only indigenous sport, to break down cultural and ethnic barriers. We may come from many different backgrounds but we are all Australians.
The Harmony Cup was an official Harmony Day event. Eight teams from Melbourne’s multicultural communities competed the emphasis was on participation and fun.
Each team played three matches under the banner of their country of origin and in their national colours.
The two teams that were ranked first and second at the conclusion of the preliminary round of matches played each other in the Grand Final. The winner, Lebanon, was awarded the Harmony Cup by AFL Legend Ron Barassi. Each team and/or the community they represented also provided a cultural performance during the day.
The event was put together by Aussie Rules International(ARI), which was formed in 1995 to promote and develop Australian football internationally.
