Eastern Canada Australian Football League
The Eastern Canada Australian Football League (ECAFL) is an 8 to 12-a-side football competition aimed at introducing Aussie Rules to Quebec and the surrounding areas.
With the creation of the Quebec Saints in early 2008 a need arose for an easily accessible way to play Aussie Rules locally in Montreal and the surrounding areas. Playing on Sundays and using reduced numbers and readily available American football fields the Quebec Saints divided its team into two ECAFL clubs - the Montreal Saints and the Laval Bombers. On 3 October 2008 the first ECAFL match was played, with the Laval Bombers 12.14 (86) defeating the Montreal Saints 11.12 (78).
In 2009 the ECAFL held a pre-season tournament where the two existing clubs, the Saints and Bombers, were joined by the Ottawa Swans and the Montreal Shamrocks Gaelic team. The Swans clinched the cup with a hard fought out victory over the Laval Bombers in thefinal match of the tournament.
2009 saw the Saints and Bombers play seven regular season matches. A new ECAFL club the Pointe Claire Power played their first exhibition match looking toward a full time birth in 2010. The Bombers claimed the premiership for the second year running crushing the Saints 27.12 (174) to 2.6 (18) in the final.
The 2009 ECAFL season also saw the beginnings of women's football in the ECAFL, with 4 teams competing throughout the year - Montreal Angels, Montreal Devils, Montreal Shamrocks Women's Gaelic team and the Central Blues Women's team.
