Guelph Gargoyles
The Guelph Gargoyles were formed by brothers Bruce and Richard Parker in the spring of 2001. Bruce had been playing for the Misissauga Mustangs since 1994 and had introduced Richard to the game as a player in 2000. Richard played for the Mustangs in his rookie season and was voted by the team as the club's rookie of the year. Richard, a resident of Guelph since 1991, felt that a club would do well and he would not have to travel three times a week to Mississauga.
Recruiting during the month of May gained a core of 8 players, mostly students from the University of Guelph. The team had its first game against the Mississauga Mustangs with the help of players from the Dingos, Eagles and Wildcats. The Gargoyles lost that first game and despite that the team was even more committed to succeeded. Danny Pellin, a high schoolteacher on exchange for the year joined the Gargoyles and brought many of his students to join the team. The Gargoyles were almost complete. Continued recruiting throughout the summer helped develop a consistent roster with most players playing 10 games in their first season.
While the club did not have a winning record that season it did make the finals. The Gargoyles were soundly beat by a more experienced Toronto Eagles club. All in all a successful first season.
The club has developed since that first season in 2001 and now competes with the best teams in the league. There is a core of Canadian players who are still with the team from that first season and some Australians who have made Guelph their new home. New players join the ranks every year and consist of a mix of Canadians looking for a new sport to try, rugby converts and Australians either passing through or those that have moved to Guelph.
The Gargoyles are one of the more social teams in the league and always have a good time both on and off the field.
